About This Data
What Is RentData?
RentData aggregates official US housing datasets so renters, buyers, and researchers can compare rental costs, home values, and affordability across every US city in one place. Every city page shows Fair Market Rents by bedroom size, the median home value, a rent-vs-buy break-even estimate, and an income-to-rent burden calculation — all updated monthly.
Our Data Sources
Rent prices come from HUD Fair Market Rents (FMR), which represent the 40th percentile of gross rents for standard-quality units across 2,500+ metro areas. Home values are sourced from the Zillow Home Value Index (ZHVI). Income data comes from the US Census Bureau American Community Survey (ACS), and employment data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).
Who Is This For?
RentData is built for renters deciding where to live, remote workers comparing cities, researchers studying housing affordability, and anyone who wants transparent, data-backed answers to the question: how much does it cost to live here? No signup required, no paywalls — just the data.
